Kiwengwa is located in the northeast coast of Unguja island and it consists of three villages – Cairo in the north, Gulioni and Kumbaurembo in the south. Close to the villages is the Kiwengwa forest, which is the largest remaining tract of coral rag forest in the north of the island.
According to the 2002 Census, the villages had a combined population of 2 429 people, or 415 families, of whom 1 308 people were men and 1 121 women. The population in the villages has increased significantly, as in the 1988 Census there were only 560 people (119 men and 439 women), or 106 families in Kiwengwa.
